Auftakt zur Sprachen-Woche

Na, dann wollen wir mal. Neil InActualFact hat vorgelegt und auf schwaebisch gebloggt. Christina hat auf Deutsch gebloggt. Dann will ich mal meine Muttersprache herauskramen und auch mal auf Deutsch bloggen.

Sprachen-Woche, hoert sich irgendwie komisch an. Mir faellt allerdings keine bessere Uebersetzung fuer Language Week ein. Fremdsprachen-Woche vielleicht? Aber das trifft es ja auch nicht richtig, da ich (und ein paar andere) nicht in einer Fremdsprache bloggen werden (das tun wir normalerweise), sondern nur in einer Sprache in der wir normalerweise nicht bloggen. In meinem Fall ist das Deutsch, die Sprache meiner Eltern, die Sprache mit der ich aufgewachsen bin. Inzwischen benutze ich sie vergleichsweise wenig, eigentlich nur wenn ich mit Familie und Freunden in Deutschland kommuniziere und wenn ich Deutsche Medien lese. Mein Alltag laeuft fast komplett auf Englisch ab, selbst mit Deutschen Kollegen hier in Swindon kommuniziere ich vorwiegend in Englisch.

Meine Tastatur ist Britisch (Ja, eine Amerikanische Tastatur ist wieder anders), deshalb schreibe ich auch keine richtigen Umlaute. Wenn ich meine Eltern oder Schwester in Deutschland besuche und dort versuche auf einer Deutschen Tastatur zu schreiben ist das manchmal gar nicht so einfach. Natuerlich kann ich noch Deutsch, aber ich merke dass ich nicht mehr die Praxis habe. Ab und zu schleichen sich Fehler ein und immer oefter schreibe ich etwas und frage mich dann, schreibt man das wirklich so? Neulich fiel mir das Deutsche Wort fuer Dashboard einfach nicht ein (Es ist Armaturenbrett, wie mir dann jemand sagte). Das waere mir von ein paar Jahren nicht passiert.

Kick-off for Language week

Ok then, let's begin. Neil InActualFact has forged ahead and blogged in Swabian. Christina has blogged in German. Time to dig out my mother tongue and blog in German for a change.

Sprachen-Woche, that sounds a bit strange. But then I can't think of a better translation for Language Week. Fremdsprachen-Woche (Foreign Language Week) may be? But that wouldn't be right either, as me (and a few others) won't blog in a foreign language (that's what we normally do), only in a language we don't usually blog in. In my case that's German, the language of my parents, the language I grew up with. Now I use it comparably little, actually only when I communicate with my family and friends in Germany or when I read German media. My everyday life is almost completely in English, even with German colleagues here in Swindon I communicate mainly in English.

My keyboard is British (Yes, an American keyboard is something different again), which is why I don't write correct umlauts. When I visit my parents or sister in Germany and try to write on a German keyboard I'm frequently struggling with the different layout. Of course I can still speak German, but I do notice that I'm lacking the practice. Mistakes start to creep in and more and more often I write something and then ask myself, do you really write it that way? Recently I just couldn't think of the German word for dashboard (It is Armaturenbrett, as someone had to tell me) That wouldn't have happened a few years ago.
