Have a few links...
Yes, I'm still here. Couldn't be bothered on Sunday and wasn't feeling well yesterday. But I'm back for now. Have a few links and thoughts:
- This one made me laugh: Miss Anthropy has a chat with one of those voice recognition systems. Hilarious. And frustrating if you have to deal with it.
- I think Neil and Duncan might have a slightly different opinion than me. I think European integration and harmonisation needs to continue and like it how The Independent debunks some Eurosceptic myths. For me the European Constitution doesn't lead to the infamous "Single European State", whatever that is. And even if it did, where's the problem with that? If some of the concerns raised by Eurosceptics (as well as in Neil's and Duncan's entries) are correct we should as soon as possible disband Germany and the UK. Or why can the local state governments in Germany block federal legislation via the Bundesrat? And how can the UK survive with a single currency, government etc despite consisting out of several different countries which each have a lot of national pride (just go outside here in England right now, you can't avoid the English flags all over the place...)? But Charles Kennedy puts it much better than me in a recent interview with the BBC: Former Minister Frank Field a member of 'Labour against a Superstate' and Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy on the myths of the EU Constitution. (second half of the clip)
- Another story how the upstart replaced the old guard. Only that it wasn't the intention in this case...
- I haven't followed the discussions when the oil reserves will run out, but I guess it might still happen within my lifetime. The BBC has an essay on the question What will we drive when the oil runs out? And when you really think about it that point is probably less important in comparison to another one I'm wondering what the answer will be: Considering how many of our everyday goods are made out of petrochemical processes (e.g. plastics), how will they be replaced? Answers on...
But that doesn't mean lots of these ads won't feel like spam
writes the New York Times in an interesting report about permission based marketing (and spam?) on mobile phones. I think it will be a long time until I give my agreement to marketers to spam me on my mobile...
- Wow, I haven't seen so many inaccuracies and myths in one place for a while: Declan McCullagh doesn't get it. A good response (from an American living in the UK) analyses several of the flaws in Declan's argument. I could add quite a few more, but I'm not sure if there's much point to comment much more on such a badly researched article.
That enough links and thoughts? Anyway, I'm off to bed...
