German Bloggers
Andreas points to the German blogger series: expatriates in America and Germany by Thomas Nephew. Thomas also mentions my Blogging abroad list, although two of the four bloggers he reviews are likely to move to my Returned expats list later this year ;-)
Probably because I don't live in the US Thomas didn't ask me, so I thought I just take the liberty to take his questions and answer them here:
- Where do you live abroad? Swindon/England
- For how long? Altogether 6 years (not counting the time I lived in the US)
- Where do you come from? Bremen/Germany
- Why did you decide to live abroad? Job opportunity/because I like it here
- When did you take up blogging -- before or after moving abroad? After, blogs didn't really exist when I first moved abroad
- Was being an expatriate a reason for blogging? No. Not at all. I don't even know exactly why I started blogging
- Do you enjoy living abroad? Yes, otherwise I probably wouldn't be here any more
- How long do you think you’ll stay? Currently I have no plans to go back to Germany. And I think the longer I stay the less likely it is I'll ever make those plans
- Do you feel "in touch" with the country you’ve left behind? Less and less. The only contact I have is through my parents and sister as well as a few old friends. Most of the politicians don't mean anything to me, a lot of the issues discussed in the German media don't mean anything to me either. Simply because I don't live there. They don't concern me any more.
- Do you feel "in touch" with the country you’re in now? I'd like to think so. The UK is where my daily life is now. Decision the UK government makes impact me, even though I'm not allowed to vote which government makes those decisions. Issues discussed in the British media concern and interest me, either because they impact my life or because I find them interesting in general.
- Can you point to political or other views that have been changed or deepened by being an expatriate? How do you think living abroad has affected you and your writing? Not really. I don't know how my political or other views would have developed if I had stayed in Germany. May be my look at life and the world has become more open by being exposed to a different culture to the one I grew up in. But that's about it.
And anything not answered here is hopefully answered here
