Zeit fuer etwas Plattdeutsch
Der dritte Tag der Language Week (Sprachen-Woche). Nach zwei Tagen mit Deutsch ist es jetzt Zeit fuer eine etwas andere Sprache. Einige wissen vielleicht dass ich in Bremen geboren und aufgewachsen bin. Heute bin ich nur noch sehr selten in Bremen, aber vergessen habe ich es nicht. In Bremen gibt es noch Leute die eine selten gewordene Sprache sprechen. Ich kann es kaum, nur ein bisschen lesen und hoeren. Von welcher Sprache rede ich? Plattdeutsch.
Da ich es selber kaum sprechen und schreiben kann will ich einfach ein paar plattdeutsche Zitate mit Bremer Einschlag bringen an die ich mich noch gut erinnern kann. Zuerst dieses:
Buten un binnen, wagen un winnen.
Ins Hochdeutsche uebersetzt bedeutet das so viel wie 'Draussen und drinnen, wagen und gewinnen'. Es ist das Motto der Bremer Kaufmannschaft. Gefaellt mir irgendwie.
Das naechste Zitat findet sich auf dem Schild des Rolands, eines der Wahrzeichen Bremens. Es ist schon etwas aelter und deshalb kein 'modernes' Plattdeutsch, aber trotzdem schoen:
Vryheit do ick juw openbar,
De Carel und mannig Vorst vorwahr
Deser Stat gegeven hat:
Des dancket Gode; is min rath!
Ins Hochdeutsche uebersetzt bedeutet das folgendes:
Freiheit offenbare ich dir,
die Karl und viele Fürsten
dieser Stadt gegeben hat,
dafür danket Gott, ist mein Rat

Time for some Plattdeutsch
The third day of Language Week. After two days with German it is time for a slightly different language. Some might know that I was born in Bremen/ Germany and grew up there as well. Nowadays I only visit Bremen occasionally (meaning once a year), but I haven't forgotten it. In Bremen you can still find a few people who are able to speak a comparably rare language. I can't really speak it, only read a little bit and understand some of it. Which language am I talking about? Plattdeutsch or Low German.
As I can't really speak or write in Plattdeutsch I decided to just mention a few quotes in Plattdeutsch with a connection to Bremen I remember well. First this one:
Buten un binnen, wagen un winnen.
This means as much as 'home and away, to risk and to win'. It is the motto of the merchants of Bremen. I like it.
The next one can be found on the shield of the Roland, one of the landmarks of Bremen. It is a bit older and might not qualify as 'modern' Plattdeutsch, but is nice nevertheless:
Vryheit do ick juw openbar,
De Carel und mannig Vorst vorwahr
Deser Stat gegeven hat:

This means as much as:
Freedom I reveal unto thee
which Karl and many princes
have given unto this town
give thanks unto God for this is my advice to thee.
