Some Travel Links
I completed the page for the last walk of the Islay Walking Week 2004 a few days ago, the walk at The Oa and to the American Monument. I hope to write the page for the drive back to Swindon with a stop at Crarae Gardens some time this weekend.
In the meantime a few travel related links I found interesting during the last few days:
- easyGroup is planning to open easyHotel, a fairly cheap no-frills hotel chain. (Found via a report in The Independent, there's also a review in the London Evening Standard). Apparently the cheapest rooms will be around £5 for those who book early and for "unpopular" (whatever that means) nights with average prices around £30. I think this could be quite interesting, especially if I only need a bed and a shower somewhere in a city. I don't mind bringing my own shampoo, I usually don't use the stuff provided by the hotel or B&B anyway. Obviously the price for a breakfast in a restaurant will have to be added to the cost of night again, so it will still be something to watch to decide what is cheaper, easyHotel or a B&B I might know or has been recommended to me.
- I'm 1.93m tall (6ft3), so I know quite well what CNN is writing about here. It's not as bad for me as the 6ft9 publisher in the report describes, but I've struggled with shower heads positioned at chest height, too short beds and in particular tiny seats with no legroom in airplanes. Short haul flights are not too bad, I can survive those, but I dread long haul flights in particular to the US west coast. I haven't had to fly to the US for a while, but I'm not looking forward to it should I ever have to again...
- I usually travel by car in the UK (unless I travel to London) and plane to anywhere else, but Wi-fi in trains could tempt me to use a train more often. And I'm probably not alone, using travel time more productively (or entertaining) is probably a huge incentive. But the price needs to come down, £12 looks expensive even for a journey from Lands End to John O'Groats (of which I'm not sure if it's possible to complete it by train).
- And for my German speaking (or at least reading) readers: A portrait of Glasgow in Der Spiegel. A fairly accurate portrait of how I've experienced Glasgow as well, it's not a pretty city as Edinburgh, but has its own fascination which makes it more interesting for me than Edinburgh. If you don't like cities and prefer whisky and fresh air, Der Spiegel also visited Islay a while ago (yes, I linked to that one before. But then there's no harm in linking to it again).
Enough travel related links, let's get out of here...
