Paid for their own island

I hadn't followed it much recently, but on my next visit to Islay I will pass it again which might have reminded me. What am I talking about? The Isle of Gigha

When I visited the Isle of Gigha in April 2002 the islanders had just taken ownership of the island after it was put put up for sale by its previous owner Derek Holt. The Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust was looking for donations to help paying off the loans, I remember seeing the collection boxes on the ferry and on the island (and putting some money into it).

And now they've done it: They just paid off a GBP 1m loan from the Scottish Land Fund. The island is growing in a variety of areas: houses, businesses, population and pupils at the local school to name a few. Quite impressive.

It will be interesting to see how this continues to develop. I hope they can continue with the momentum they currently have and other islands can achieve similar things given the opportunity. It would be sad if all those great places couldn't be kept alive or even grow.

I vaguely remember playing with this contraption. I don't remember if it was any good. It probably was.
