Paying for ranking

The New York Times analyses how paying for an improved ranking is spreading to other services than search engines. Online career services seem to be a prime example, I only wonder if it really works: Candidates seem to get more hits on their CV's, but not necessarily more offers. Companies get some candidates highlighted, but will they be the ones with the right skills?
