Badger, Badger, Badger

Picture of a footpath

Almost every morning I go jogging on a disused railtrack which is now a popular footpath and/or cycle path. The path begins just around the corner from where I live and leads towards West Swindon for a good mile or so. I haven't seen any for a while now, but have seen them several times already, sometimes only about 2-300 yards from my house:

Badgers.

I had one running towards me once, a quite scary experience, it seemed as if it intended to attack me. It only turned away when I stamped on the ground and made some other noise. I've also had them running through the undergrowth next to the path, they make quite a lot of noise when they do. And they are fast, very fast. I don't think a human would have a chance trying to outrun them.

Having had these experiences I'm not surprised that this pensioner got a bit scared when a badger entered her house through the catflap. The report doesn't mention where she lives, so I'm not sure if it was anywhere near here. There are some houses right next to the path, the badgers have burrowed quite deep holes there. May be one of them decided to drop in at the neighbours?

For a more relaxing experience try some Badger Badger Badger here. And yes, the title of this entry was inspired by it.

Update: Here's the Wiltshire Constabulary press release about the badger incident.
